今回は和歌山県立医科大学（2015年度）和文英訳を解きました。「近代国家」や「列強国」のように文字通り英訳して良いのかどうか悩む表現が多く他大学の問題より難しく感じました。
問題
- （１）日本は17世紀以降、200年以上国を閉ざし、海外との交流を断っていました。
- （２）そして1853年にペリー提督（Admiral Perry）がやってきたとき、その200年の間に、世界が大きく変化し、日本が近代化した他の国に比べて大きく立ち遅れてしまったことに気づいたのです。
- （３）それから間もなく、1867年に近代国家として生まれ変わって以来、日本は国をあげて世界のレベルに追いつけ追い越せと、懸命に努力をしてきました。
- （４）そして努力の甲斐あって、ほんの数十年のうちに日本は当時の列強の仲間入りをすることができたのです。
実際に書いた英文
- （１）Since the 17th century, Japan had closed its doors and stopped trading with most foreign countries for more than 200 years.
- （２）It was not until Admiral Perry came to Japan that the country realized the world changed a lot and it fell far behind other advanced nations during the period.
- （３）Soon after, it reformed its political system and became an industrialized nation in 1867. Since then, Japan worked hard to reach and exceed international standards.
- （４）Thanks to these efforts, in just a few decades, Japan joined the group of the world's leading nations.
解説
（１）
- 「国を閉ざす」 ⇒ 「門戸を閉ざす」と解釈し"close the doors"を選択。
- 「海外との交流を断つ」 ⇒ "stop trading with other foreign countries"と解釈できるか。厳密には清（中国）、オランダとは交易を続けていたので"stop trading with most foreign countries"とmostのニュアンスを追加。
（２）
- 「～して初めて…する」 ⇒ "It was not until ～ that …"
- 「その200年の間に」 ⇒ 前文で200年と出てきているので"during the period"を選択。これでその200年が伝わる。
- 「～から大きく立ち遅れる」 ⇒ "fall far behind "
（３）
- 「近代国家に生まれ変わる」とは何か。文字通り"a modern nation"と英訳できるか。"a modern nation"が何を意味するかわからなかったので「近代国家」が「国民主権 / 教育 / 選挙」など行政や教育などが刷新された国家形態、産業化された国家と解釈し"reformed the political system and became an industrialized nation（政治システムを改革し産業国家になった）"と書いた。
- 「追いつき追い越す」 ⇒ 国際的な水準（international levels / standards）のような単語が続くのでそれに合う動詞を選択しなければならない。reach ～ standards / exceed ～ standardsはともに可。したがって"reach（～にたどり着く）""exceed（～を超える）"を選択。
- 「懸命に努力する」 ⇒ 一見難しそうに見えるが"work hard"
（４）
- 「ほんの数十年のうちに」 ⇒ "in just a few decades" 「ほんの10年のうちに」と具体的に10年というときであればin less than a decade"は可だが、"a few decades"は20-30年と幅がある表現なのでless thanを除いた"in just a few decades"を選択。
- 「列強国家」 ⇒ この英作文の中でわからなかった表現が列強国家。普通に考えれば"strong nations"だが本当にそれで大丈夫なのか。「主要国家」と解釈し"leading nations"を選択。後で調べると"great powers"で列強国という意味。"leading nations"を選択しても意味上、間違いではない。
- 「列強に加わる」 ⇒ 文字通りに解釈すると"join the world's leading nations"になるが違和感がある。例えば当時の列強国は「イギリス」「フランス」「アメリカ」などで「その国」に加わるのではなく「（その国が属している）列強国というグループに加わる」というのが適切な解釈なので"join the group of ～"を選択。
